Who is Sylvia Olmstead?

Ever since I was a little girl, nature has been my playground, and insects my constant companions. I remember collecting beetles, tracing the patterns of spider webs, and watching ants in the yard, enthralled by their capacities. What started as simple curiosity quickly grew into a deep passion for the tiny creatures that play such a vital role in our world. As I spent more time watching and learning about insects, my appreciation only grew for them—they move around day-to-day, unnoticed by humans, but they have their own intentions and desires nevertheless. This love for insects has stayed with me as I've grown older, and now, as an 18-year-old going into her junior year for a bachelor's in environmental science, I’m eager to share my enthusiasm with othe

That’s why I’m so excited to launch my junior entomology day camp, a place where I can share my passion and knowledge with kids. This camp is designed to give children the opportunity to explore the roles bugs play in our ecosystem, learn about their unique abilities, and develop a deeper understanding of nature. Whether it’s discovering why cicadas sleep for 17 years, or how caterpillars transform into butterflies, the camp will be full of hands-on learning and fun. I want to fill kids with passion and excitement, helping them to see the beauty and importance of the natural world, just as I did when I was their age.

All of the proceeds from the camp will go toward funding my bachelor’s degree in environmental science, supporting my education as I work toward my own goals. This camp is not only a way for me to share my passion with kids, but also a stepping stone toward my future career. I’m excited to share my passion with young minds, reminding people to notice the beauty and tiny wonders that surround us.
